LOS ANGELES, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Marvel made their presence known in Super Bowl 50, with Marvel characters spread throughout the biggest single-day sporting event of 2016.
First it was the latest trailer for their R-rated Deadpool whose film opens next weekend, then Marvel's biggest character and smallest character got together in their own commercial, then two more trailers for their next big features appeared. Overall, more than 20 Marvel characters graced the TV screens on Super Sunday.
The latest glimpse of Deadpool, featuring their potty-mouthed anti-hero in a slightly sanitized version for a family audience, kicks things off with a knock on professional athletes in much the same way the film knocks the entire superhero movie genre, with star Ryan Reynolds saying he always wanted to be a pro athlete because he always wanted to "have children in cities all over the world."
The Hulk and Ant-Man starred in an ad for Coke Mini, with Ant-Man taking the last one from the fridge in Bruce Banner's lab. Banner is not pleased and -- as the not-so-jolly green giant -- chases Ant-Man down to get it back. The CGI is first rate, looking as good as anything straight from the Marvel movies and also features the voice of Paul Rudd in his second appearance of the game. He also has a brief cameo in the Amy Schumer/ Set Rogen Bud Light commercial.
The teaser trailer for Marvel Studios' Captain America: Civil War reveals -- at light speed -- the all-star cast of the blockbuster and a mix of action and drama along with the Super Bowl appropriate tagline: Choose Your Team.
Finally, it was X-Men: Apocalypse. Though not technically a Marvel Studios release, it is a 20th Century Fox co-production with Marvel. Like Civil War, it also has a Super Bowl appropriate utterance from Jennifer Lawrence as the action mounts in the teaser, as Lawrence says "Let's go to war."
