A solo show of paintings by abstract art pioneer in India Ram Kumar, who is a contemporary of artists M.F. Husain, F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza and Akbar Padamsee, is being organised at Aakriti Art Gallery in the city.
Titled “Lines and Colours”, the exhibition displays an array of works by the artist in the small format, done on paper with ink/pastel, over five decades. The show has been created by well-known poet and art critic Prayag Shukla, a close associate of Ram Kumar. It focuses and seeks to celebrate works which differ to a large extent from the bigger works done on canvas with oil and acrylic and are singular in their approach and intent.
In these small format works which have been on display very rarely, the viewer is invited to absorb more intimately, a journey of the artist which traverses, paths, bridges and mountain-like heights in dark, white, grey and bright hues. The woks are like pages from the personal diary of the artist, done on bahikhatas (account books) and have come to the gallery directly from the artist and range from the 1960s to the present.
The exhibition will travel to Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata after the show in Delhi ends on February 28 at Aakriti Art Gallery in Lado Sarai.
