College Roundup: OCC men’s volleyball improves to 3-0

SANTA BARBARA – The visiting Pirates improved to 3-0 by earning a 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 triumph over the Vaqueros in a nonconference match Saturday.

BASEBALL

Cuesta 3, Orange Coast 2

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The host Cougars completed a three-game series sweep in an 11-inning nonconference contest Saturday.

OCC (2-4), ranked No. 1 in Southern California, erased a 2-0 first-inning deficit with runs in the second and fourth innings. But the Pirates managed just six hits and its four errors made all of the Cougars’ runs unearned.

Nolan Powers was one for three with one run batted in to pace a struggling OCC offense that was blanked by Cuesta (4-1) on Thursday and Friday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 61, Biola 48

Samantha Doucette scored 19 points and Mellisa Norman had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

Kandyce Smith and Maya Kennedy each had five points and six assists for Vanguard (16-4, 8-2 in conference).

Biola is 13-12, 6-5.

Cal Polo SLO 50, UC Irvine 32

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Senior guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had 13 points and six rebounds, while Mokun Fajemisin had 16 rebounds and five points for the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game on Saturday.

Cheung-Sutton was three four six from three-point range, but UCI (4-19, 1-8 in conference) shot 21.9% from the field.

Cal Poly is 11-11, 4-5.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Biola 70, Vanguard 69

Zach Allmon had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Lions in the Golden State Atheltic Conference game on Saturday.

Jaamon Echols added 25 points for Vanguard (15-7, 4-6 in conference).

Biloa is 22-3, 9-2.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

CLAREMONT — Visiting Vanguard University split a pair with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Lions won the first game, 11-4, but dropped the second game, 2-1.

Kaitlyn Estes drove in four runs and Payton Ross knocked in three for the Lions in Game 1.

Summer Penner was two for two with two runs, while Vanguard teammate Kristyn Whitley and Kimberlee Estes (one RBI) were both two for four.

Alexandra Olvera earned the pitching win for Vanguard.

In the second game, both teams managed just three hits. Samantha Shaffer was two for three with one RBI to pace the No. 18-ranked Lions.

Vanguard is 3-3.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is 1-1.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Stanford Invitational

STANFORD – UC Irvine defeated UC Davis, 10-8, then lost to Cal, 7-2, on Saturday at Stanford University.

The No. 5-ranked Anteaters received three goals from Mary Brooks and Gabby Pierandozzi against No. 11-ranked UC Davis.

Natalie Siedmann added two goals and Jenna Phreaner had seven saves in the win.

No. 4-ranked Cal sent the Anteaters (2-2) into the consolation bracket.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Sacramento State 5, UC Irvine 2

Vivien Dvali (No. 2) and Andrea Duva (No. 6) posted singles wins for the host Anteaters in the nonconference match Saturday.

Sarah Gong and Stephanie Hazell won their No. 1 doubles match for UCI (1-4).

Sacramento State is 3-0.
