Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi will commence election campaigns in the Union Territory of Puducherry, said Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president A.Namassivayam on Saturday.
Senior Congress leaders including Mr. Namassivayam and AICC general secretary V.Narayanasamy participated at a meeting with leaders in New Delhi.
Later talking to The Hindu , Mr. Namassivayam said, “We have invited our leaders to lead the election campaigns in the Union Territory and they have agreed to.”
He also added that with permission of the Congress leaders, the Puducherry unit would receive applications from aspirants who are willing to contest elections on party ticket.
Mr. Namassivayam said committees for manifestoes, co-ordinations and campaigns would soon be constituted.
Mr. Narayanasamy said that they have briefed the leaders on how the Modi government has been freezing welfare programmes that were brought during UPA regime.
Prior to the Delhi visit, Puducherry Congress leadership had initiated a series of meeting with party workers to chalk out a political strategy taking into account local factors.
This is part of the high command’s move to bring about a consensus on core issues, drive reforms through a consultative process ahead of galvanising the party for the Assembly elections in a few States this year.
