Eighty eight staff nurses attached to the non-communicable diseases unit were honoured with Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi Memorial Medal and Certificate at a function here on Saturday as part of the World Cancer Day.

These staff nurses played a crucial role in preventing cancer among women, said V. C. Subash Gandhi, Research Scholar and resource-person of the Tamil Nadu Health System Project, Pudukottai.

Early detection

Reeling out statistics, he said that about nine lakh women across the district were screened for early detection of cancer cervix and cancer breast in the last five years and it was these staff nurses who administered medicines and drugs to them, thereby preventing cancer.

S. Ramadoss, president of Pudhugai Poonkothu, a service organisation, gave away the certificates and medals to the staff nurses. He spoke on the efficacy of preventing cancer and the awareness programmes being organised would go a long way in achieving the desired goals.
