Kolhapur district Superintendent of Police Pradeep Deshpande on Saturday granted conditional permission to screen the controversial Marathi feature film ‘Marathi Tigers’, based on the prolonged boundary dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra and the violent incidents in Yellur in Belagavi taluk, in Shinoli till February 19.
The SP granted the permission considering a request from the film’s producer Abhijit Basgonda Tashildar.
But he has laid down five conditions failing of which the permission will be withdrawn.
They are, the screening should not lead to law and order problems in the boundary areas of Karnataka and Maharashtra; there shall be only one show in a day; no member of the audience shall raise or shout any provocative or objectionable slogans during the screening; the viewers shall not indulge in advertisement in any way and promptly follow the directions of the police officials/personnel.
Denial
The tahsildar of Chandgad taluk on Thursday had denied permission to screen the film in Shinoli, situated across the boundary of Karnataka and about 15 km from Belagavi city, in view of the threats to the law and order situation in the boundary areas.
However, a conditional permission was granted in the night by the Kolhapur administration.
No theatre owner in Belagavi district came forward to screen the film as the district administration and police authorities made it clear that they would be held responsible if the screening of the film sparked off a law and order problem.
