Debate needed on bringing about change, says Shekhar Gupta

February 07, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - HUBBALLI:

“A larger debate needs to be initiated for bringing about a change in governance and for that to happen, more citizens should actively involve themselves in the process,” senior journalist Shekhar Gupta has said.

Participating in a panel discussion on ‘Ideas impacting millions’ on the inaugural day of ‘Development Dialogue-2016’ here on Saturday, he said that the government model in the country was originally designed to cater to a population of 35 crore and to cater to the requirements of a 120-crore population, it should be expanded to make it sustainable.

Pointing out how the focus by the governments on bigger cities had not brought about desired results, Mr. Gupta said that there was need to get the bigger cities “freed from politics.” He said that with the social media and other online platforms, the arrogance of the owners of some of the established media houses had been defeated. “Despite the advent of the social media, the role of journalism has remained the same, but only the platform has changed. And now the platform belongs to everyone,” he said.
