Chennai: Alleging irregularities in the selection process of vice-chancellors of state-run universities, PMK leader S Ramadoss on Saturday demanded the state government to wait until the Madras high court gave its verdict on the appointments to the top posts.
The selection committees set up to identify the prospective candidates to head Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tiruvallur University in Vellore and Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University in Chennai have shortlisted three names and submitted them to the Governor and chancellor K Rosaiah for consideration.
None of three qualify as per the UGC norms that mandate that they complete ten years of services as professors.
"The state government is attempting to ruin the varsities by appointing ineligible and influential people, similar to that of appointments made in the state information commission and the TN public service commission," Ramadoss said. tnn, and warned that such a situation would lead to commercialization of educational institutions and would impinge the quality of higher education.
Meanwhile, Anna University former vice-chancellor Prof M Anandakrishnan and Change India director A Narayanan has sent a memorandum to Governor, requesting him not to take any hasty decision based on the reports of search committees before the court order. The selection committees of Madurai Kamaraj University and Bharathiyar University are expected to meet soon to shortlist candidates and forward the recommendations.
