Talvar premiere on TV beats star-packed movies
Of the movies that released in 2015, Talvar, directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Junglee Pictures and Vishal Bhardwaj, stood out for the riveting dramatisation of true life events revolving around the controversial Aarushi Talwar murder case. With solid performances by Irrfan, Konkona Sensharma and Neeraj Kabi, the film was gritty, bold and intriguing, without falling into the trap of the usual exploitative mediums of storytelling.
That’s also one of the reasons why the film triumphed with the critics and viewers alike.
With a brutally honest portrayal, it left the audiences with more doubts and more questions on one of the most dark, twisted and debated crime and punishment cases in recent times. Talvar reopened the debate on social media, demanding that Aarushi’s parents, who have been languishing in jail for years, should be given a fair and quick trial. An online petition to fast-track the murder case also went viral.

And now, Talvar has drawn the curiosity of viewers even on television. The film recently premiered on Star Gold, and was widely viewed by the audience. According to BARC data, the film has rated higher than premieres of large-scale movies with bigger stars. Talvar has rated 1.07 TVR, way ahead of films like Shaandaar (0.66), Brothers (0.57) and Shamitabh (0.41). Hemal Zaveri (Executive EVP-GM, Star Gold) says, “The viewership numbers for Talvar symbolise the shift in terms of audience preference. Like the case it is based on, the movie too had become a talking point. The film opened to rave reviews and got a good response. So we were positive it would be received well on satellite TV, too.”

Rightly so. It reinforces the fact that today, the audience is driven by content-rich films, and while big stars bring the weight of their stardom, it’s not a sure-shot means to a commercially successful project. Superstars rule. But content conquers. And more films like Talvar should be made to give Bollywood that much-needed edge.
