When your daily life requires shuttling around to store openings, photo shoots, parties, and hair-and-makeup appointments as often as most people run to the bank or supermarket, you’re bound to develop a profound appreciation for downtime at home. Such is the case for Kourtney Kardashian, who balances motherhood while maintaining her status as part of America’s most famous family. In 2014 she purchased an 11,500-square-foot, Tuscan-style mansion from former NFL player Keyshawn Johnson in Calabasas, California, but it wasn’t until a few months ago that she asked friend and Million Dollar Decorators star Martyn Lawrence Bullard to help make the house her own. “We wanted to make it sophisticated but family-friendly,” says Bullard, an aesthetic he achieved thanks to a palette of textured neutrals and sumptuous materials. Here’s how to get the look in your own home.

Choose a nuanced color scheme.“I’m very afraid of color,” Kardashian confesses. In the living room, Bullard introduced black and gray accents to define a soothing beige-and-white palette while adding depth and dimension.

Add warmth with wood.In Kardashian’s dining room, Bullard placed a bespoke wood table and a suite of vintage Pierre Jeanneret chairs from JF Chen under a José Esteves chandelier from Intérieurs. The same chairs appear in her home office, where the crisp lines of a vintage Jules Leleu desk are tempered by hardwood flooring and ceiling.

Layer in texture.Christian Liaigre sofas dressed in a Schumacher wool and a Larsen leather are joined by a sleek Steinway piano, a vintage Oscar Niemeyer chair and ottoman, and several custom-designed pieces in Kardashian’s living room. The curtains are of a Loro Piana wool-linen.

Incorporate natural elements.Limestone counters, linen curtains, and a cozy Berber-style rug lend a sense of rusticity to the master bath’s gleaming surfaces and fittings.

Use artwork to infuse subtle color.Earthy hues in Kardashian’s master bedroom are punctuated with vibrant artwork by James Turrell. In her office, a saturated work on paper by Bridget Riley breaks up a series of black-and-white photographs.
