Varanasi: Governor of Goa Mridula Sinha wants addition of `Pariva Bachao’ (save family) in the slogan `Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (Save Girls, Educate Girls)- the favourit campaign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sinha stunned the gathering by saying that her mother also wanted to kill her before birth but her father not only saved her but also broke many traditions of village to ensure that she is becoming highly educated and self-dependent.
She also emphasized on preserving folk songs and music.
Sinha was addressing the inaugural session of Swadeshi Mela hosted by Swadeshi Jagran Manch with the theme of `Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ at cultural complex Chowkaghat here on Saturday. She said, “Seeing Modi speaking of girl child make me recalling my father. My mother had consumed some medicine to abort me when she became pregnant at the age of 40. She initiated this step out of shy only as there was no means for sex determination at that time. My father took my mother to city and stayed there till my safe birth.”
Calling upon the people not to think on the line of `Beti ko beta ki tarah palna hai’ (Girl has to be nurtured like boy), the Goa Governor said, “It gives me pleasure to the changed approach of fathers today. The fathers from rural areas are also ensuring better education for their daughters. But, in this process they are forgetting to inherit the basic values and culture, which is becoming a major reason for break in marriage and in families too.” She said that this is the reason why the grandparents should remain the part of families forever instead of sending them to old age homes because a grandmother plays key role in inheriting basic values, culture and traditions at a time when mothers fail to find time to give to their children.
She said that due to the same reasons she had appealed the universities to add syllabus on family management in their courses. She also mentioned the importance of folk songs and music by saying, “Folk songs should never be considered as mean of entertainment. By going through the history of folk songs it can be found how it contained teachings on family and social traditions and values.”
