TV previews, February 7: Doc Martin, Ching's Chinese New Year and Modern Family
By Melinda Houston
DOC MARTIN
Series return ***1/2
7.30pm, ABC
Possibly as the result of the long break between series, Doc Martin has managed to hang on to most of its mojo over 12 years and seven seasons, and returns tonight as pleasantly acerbic and quirky as ever. Portwenn still looks glorious, the Doc's receptionist is still incompetent (even though she's his third), the good doctor himself is certainly still irascible but is still a diagnostic ace, and – sadly for him, but fortunately for the series' narrative – is also still unable to maintain a romantic relationship. So. Nothing new here – but in a show like Doc Martin, that's probably a good thing.
CHING'S CHINESE NEW YEAR
***
7.30pm, Food Network
Better than average offering from the Food Network, largely because it features actual fresh produce, not stuff out of packets or cans (or aerosol cans). Like most of the network's "celebrity chefs" Ching is a complete unknown here but she's great company and – as she prepares a New Year feast for her extended family in San Francisco – nicely balances authenticity with try-this-at-home. She also uses this special to explain some of the significance of the Lunar New Year and the Chinese rituals and traditions associated with it. A thoroughly enjoyable package.
MODERN FAMILY
***
8pm, Ten
Modern Family lost its edge some time ago – it's rare these days that it manages to raise a laugh. Now it's more in the comfortable-slipper category of comedy: watching an episode is more about spending time with old friends than ending up in stitches. But, you know, there are all kinds of funny and a feel-good show that leaves you smiling certainly has value. Tonight Alex heads off to college while the rest of the family do their utmost to avoid attending Lily's soccer match. Sweet-natured high-jinks ensue.
