Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has planned a clean-up drive across wells in the city. The decision, taken in a meeting held on Friday, comes in the backdrop of acute water shortage. The administration will also find out new water refilling centres in the city.
The PMC's meeting was organised evens as the guardian minister Girish Bapat hinted towards more water cuts in store for the city since .
More water supply cuts look imminent in the city because it will have to share its quota in the Khadakwasla dam with rural areas in the district. The water planning committee on Monday decided to release 1.6TMC water from Khadakwasla. The water discharged on Friday to quench the thirst of towards villages in Daund, Indapur and Haveli. The decision was taken in a meeting headed by Bapat.
"The administration will have to manage the water needs of the city with lesser quantity of water. The discussions included options options were discussed on how to save water and utilise available resources. Officials proposed to utilise water wells in the city for a longer term plan. The cleanliness drive will be carried out so as to make the water in the wells useable," explained mayor Dattatraya Dhankawade, mayor of the city, while speaking to reporters.
He added that the administration has appointed a special officer to organise the work. Borewells will also be checked as part of the drive.
As per civic officials, PMC plans to utilise 399 wells and 4820 bore wells in the city. According to the Groundwater Survey and Development Agency (GSDA), 155 dug wells and 1575 borewells acros the city have potable drinking water.
At present, the four dams providing water to the city Khadakwasla, Temghar, Varasgaon and Panshet have collective stock of around 10.89 TMC water.
