Traffic cop booked for demanding Rs500 bribe

Nagpur: Head constable Sanjay Shinde, attached to traffic west wing of city police, has been booked for demanding bribe of Rs500 from a motorcyclist on the road connecting Mankapur junction and Koradi last month. Shinde was arrested by state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) wing on Friday.
It’s learnt that Shinde had retained the documents of the bike of a 29-year-old man, who is a farmer, during a checking drive on the road.
Though he had allowed the complainant to drive away his bike, Shinde was unwilling to release the documents without monetary gratifications. He had been harassing the biker repeatedly for Rs500. Shinde’s voice was recorded in a conversation with the complainant on phone. The complainant later approached ACB office since he did not want to pay the bribe.
A verification was conducted earlier this month following which the ACB sleuths laid a trap for the corrupt cop. Though the trap failed, action was initiated against Shinde for demanding a bribe on the basis of the phone recording. Shinde’s residence on Koradi Road was also searched after the action but nothing substantial was found.
