Financial markets overreacting to slowdown, says ADB chief economist

Shang-Jin Wei, chief economist of the Asian Development Bank

MANILA -- Financial markets should look beyond falling share prices when trying to fathom China's economic state, Asian Development Bank chief economist Shang-Jin Wei told the Nikkei Asian Review in an interview on Thursday.

Amid increasing fears of a hard landing for the Chinese economy, Wall Street took its sharpest tumble in eight years at the start of the year, after Shanghai stocks lost 7% on the first trading day of 2016. The drop in Chinese shares triggered a "circuit breaker" designed to limit volatility. The gloom in China has affected sentiment in other markets.
