The governor of a major province has been removed from his post over accusations of disloyalty to the ruling Communist Party.

Sichuan Governor Wei Hong's removal comes amid a climate of growing political intolerance under President and party chief Xi Jinping. Xi is seen as nurturing a nascent personality cult similar to that of the founder of the communist state, Mao Zedong.

The party's watchdog body said on its website today that Wei had been demoted to a vice departmental post and removed from his party duties. He was accused of being disloyal and dishonest. –AP
