Pune: A repeat offender, who failed to mend his ways even after serving short-term jail sentences, landed in police net again for allegedly robbing train passengers of valuables worth Rs 3.18 lakh between October 31 and December 6, 2015.
The suspect, identified as Virendra Goli Rajbar alias Abdul Rahman Shaikh (20) from Bihar but currently staying in Lohiyanagar slums, was earlier convicted in nine cases for robbery and thefts on trains between Pune and Lonavla since 2010.
However, soon after he was freed from prison, he took to thieving again.
Rajbar was arrested on January 13 after assistant inspector Mangesh Jagtap and constable Santosh Chandane from the government railway police (GRP), Pune spotted him loitering on platform number six of the Pune railway station. When they approached him, Rajbar tried to flee the spot but was caught after a brief chase.
Jagtap said Rajbar had initially denied the crime. "However, during sustained interrogation, he admitted of stealing ornaments and valuables of three passengers onboard Siddheshwar Express and Maharashtra Express trains," he said, adding that he was in GRP's custody till January 23. "A search conducted in one of Rajbar's hideouts in Kamshet led to the recovery of an iPad and some bangles. We also recovered ornaments which he sold to two goldsmiths. In all, ornaments and valuables worth Rs 2.91 lakh have been seized. He is now in magisterial custody in Yerawada central prison," Jagtap said, adding that the suspect used to target AC coach passengers at night.
The GRP had arrested Sanjay Abhimanyu Kasbe (42), from Manjari on November 26 for allegedly stealing a bag with ornaments, collectively worth Rs 38,700, of Neha Rajesh Jakatdar (39), from Nashik while traveling onboard the general compartment of Deccan Express on August 16.
