The sudden fire that sets in, at Aadharwadi dumping ground in Kalyan, giving the residents and the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) sleepless nights, is actually caused by Methane gas. The civic body has approached various environment Non Governmental Organisations's (NGO's) to find a permanent solution to the issue.

Aadharwadi dumping ground in Kalyan which has many residential complexes nearby has been a resaon of enough grief for residents. The garbage dump which has exhausted its capacity, often wintnesses, unnecessary fire incidents keeping the residents and the KDMC on its toes.

"Earlier the rag pickers in the area used to set the garbage on fire to find scrap metals which they could sell and make some money," said a source from KDMC's solid waste management department. The incidents stopped last year, after the KDMC approached the police and the culprits were caught.

However, the incidents continue and the KDMC believes it to be consequence of the methane gas emanating from garbage. The souce said, "Every month, we receive complaints from locals about these fire eruptions which is due to the presence of the gas the garbage catches fire automatically."

Due to this, the residents often complain of respiratory problems. "Whenever, there is a fire in the dump, there is smoke in the entire area, making it difficult for us to breath. We often lock the doors and windows and refrain from going out. The stench of the burning garbage is also unbearable," said Rajesh Narvekar from Kalyan.

KDMC has adopted a temporary solution of spraying water on the garbage. However, to put an end to this solution permanently, the civic body has approached various NGOs.

"On Thursday, students from one of these NGOs came to survey the area. They will study the problem and suggest a permanent solution to this," said the source not divulging into the details of the NGO.

Lack of scientific disposal of garbage is a huge problem in the KDMC. Since the Aadharwadi dumping ground has exhausted its capacity, the Bombay High Court had asked KDMC not to give permissions for construction of new commercial and residential complexes in the area.
