Sculptor excited about his work

February 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - MYSURU:

A 28-tonne single block of top quality marble was sourced from Jaipur to sculpt the 10-feet tall statue of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar.

The statue will soon be installed at Hardinge Circle, which will later be named as Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar Circle.

Now that the statue is almost done, it weighs around 13 tonnes. Including the plinth, the statue stands 15-feet tall.

Arun Yogiraj, a young sculptor, who took over six months to craft the statue, told The Hindu that he was satisfied by his work since it resembles the late maharaja.

“It is a tough job to sculpt a statue, that too a life-size one, from marble. The job was challenging since there is no second chance to execute if something goes wrong. What is striking is that the statue bears an eye-catching resemblance to the late king,” he said.

Even a sword, which is held by the king, had been crafted with the same marble stone. “The statue is almost done and ready for installation,” Mr. Arun said.
