James Pattinson has been withdrawn from Victoria's Sheffield Shield match early, and will to fly to New Zealand on Saturday as cover for Australia's first Test squad.

Pattinson, who will miss the final day of the Bushrangers' game with Tasmania, has bowled 21.3 overs - which team management deem to be sufficient preparation.

He is the second Victorian player to be withdrawn mid-match, after Marcus Stoinis was drafted into Australia's one day squad.

Pattinson will stay in Wellington and not be considered to play in the remaining two matches of the Chappell-Hadlee series.
