PHOENIX — The Seena Magowitz Golf Classic, a major fund-raising event in the fight against pancreatic cancer, is heading to Boston this summer, and will take on a baseball flavor.

David Dombrowski, president of baseball operations for the Boston Red Sox, will serve as the event’s honorary chairman. The Seena Magowitz event, founded by bedding industry veteran Roger Magowitz, supports pancreatic cancer research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix.

“I am honored to help support the Seena Magowitz Golf Classic and TGen’s cutting-edge pancreatic cancer research and clinical trials,” said Dombrowski, who became familiar with TGen when a family member sought treatment for cancer. “Boston is one of the truly great sports towns in America, and it’s my hope that this enthusiasm and excitement will make this premier event a great success.”

Dombrowski is a member of TGen’s Pancreatic Cancer National Advisory Council, a group of business leaders who assist the TGen Foundation in raising funds to support research and clinical trials for pancreatic cancer. In recent years, their efforts have led to a promising new treatment regimen, shrinking more than 80% of tumors in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, and holding the promise of substantially improved patient survival, officials said.

“We are extremely pleased to have David Dombrowski as the honorary chair and about moving the Seena Magowitz Golf Classic to Boston,” said Michael Bassoff, president of the TGen Foundation. “We hope to attract a whole new region of participants, as well as showcase a beautiful part of the country and all that the Boston region has to offer.”

The Seena Magowitz Golf Classic has raised more than $5 million for TGen’s research in pancreatic cancer, which annually claims the lives of more than 40,000 Americans, making it the nation’s fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths.

“Partnering with David Dombrowski is a dream come true for the Seena Magowitz Foundation, TGen and the hundreds of pancreatic cancer patients who need our help today,” said Magowitz. “Having the tournament based in Boston will provide a new opportunity to raise awareness surrounding this disease throughout New England and across the upper Atlantic seaboard.”

Magowitz said he plans to announce the dates and location for the 2016 event shortly.

For the past two years the Furniture/Today Bedding Conference and the Magowitz event were held at the same location, with the Magowitz event following the Bedding Conference. Each event will stand on its own this year.

Furniture/Today’s Bedding Conference is set for May 10-12 at the Westin LaPaloma Resort in Tucson, Ariz.
