MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 78, Cal Poly SLO 72 (OT)

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Mamadou Ndiaye and Luke Nelson had 21 points apiece to help the visiting Anteaters survive a Big West Conference upset bid on Wednesday.

UCI junior guard Jaron Martin made a three-pointer with one second left in regulation to force overtime, after a Reese Morgan free throw put the Mustangs (8-13, 2-6 in conference) up, 63-60 with four seconds left.

Cal Poly led, 68-65 and 70-67 in overtime, before Nelson tied it with a three-point play with 1:14 left.

Ndiaye erased a 72-70 deficit with a three-point play of his own with 36 seconds left and Nelson made four foul shots to help UCI (18-6, 7-1) preserve the win.

Ndiaye, who tied his career-best scoring output, made seven of nine field-goal attempts and seven of 10 foul shots. He also recorded half of his eight blocked shots in overtime.

Nelson had eight rebounds and four assists and was four for eight from three-point range to help UCI finish six for 13 from threedom (46.2%).

Mike Best had 11 points and eight rebounds for UCI.

Cal Poly had a 20-3 advantage on second-chance points and won the bench-scoring battle, 32-15.

UCI returns to action against Hawaii (16-3, 5-1) on Wednesday.

Orange Coast 64, Santa Ana 55

Ryan Fusco had 18 points to pace the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday.

Fusco was six for 11 from the field and added seven rebounds and three assists to help OCC improve to 9-13, 3-5 in conference.

Jamaal Lee had 11 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, while Kyle Lawson chipped in 11 points for the winners.

Santa Ana is 5-17. 1-7.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Baptist def. UC Irvine

The host Anteaters hit .168 as a team and dropped their fifth straight match, 25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Wednesday.

Tucker Pukula led UCI (2-7, 1-6 in conference) with seven kills and hit .375.

Dante Chakravorti had 33 assists and shared team-high honors with six digs, while Jason Agopian had five kills, two aces and three block assists for UCI.

Cal Baptist, which snapped a five-match losing streak, is 4-6, 1-6.

UCI plays host to USC on Friday at 7 p.m.
