The Western Uusimaa District Court on Wednesday held a preparatory session regarding maltreatment of animals on a sheep farm in Lohja.

The case involves environmental degradation and aggravated animal abuse charges for the female owner of the farm, a full-time sheep nurse and the owner’s brother who worked on the farm as an assistant.

In the writ of summons, the animals have been left untreated for years without sufficient feed. Buried barrels of animal carcasses were discovered in the farm.

According to the preliminary investigation, a single drum could hold at least 50 young lambs.

The large number of animal deaths has been mentioned by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment-ELY-Centre.

According to the municipal veterinarian, the animals had suffered needlessly.

The owner denies having committed any offence.

According to the indictment, the animal waste likely have caused pollution to the environment and created human health hazards.

The prosecutor said the trio kept the carcasses of dead sheep and lambs under tarps in the countryside as well as in uncovered barrels.

The barrels had no leak protection.
