Anatoly Lis: It is time to raise the retirement age in Belarus

LUNINETS, 3 February (BelTA) – It is time to raise the retirement age in Belarus. The opinion was voiced by Anatoly Lis, Chairman of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee, member of the Legislation and State Building Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

Hot debates about the advisability of raising the age of retirement are in progress. The Brest Oblast Governor said he believes that time would be needed to make the right call. “If we count the number of people, who have reached a certain age already, it is high time the retirement age was raised in Belarus. But if citizens of the country oppose the idea, then the matter will not be handled by orders and directives. It is necessary to discuss all the aspects first. When citizens come to recognize the need to go ahead with the change, when they grow to understand the benefits, only then the matter of raising the retirement age will be decided,” stressed Anatoly Lis.

The Governor spoke in favor of raising the retirement age gradually and Belarus is making the right steps in this direction. Only a handful of countries across the globe still keep a low retirement age, including Russia.

“Certainly, the matter is a complicated one. Specialists should work on it, should study all the aspects. In particular, it is necessary to look into population employment matters and the creation of new jobs. Many Belarusians draw pensions and still work,” stated the Brest Oblast Governor.
