Sharjah Makes History Winners of First SCC Elections Announced

SHARJAH/Sharjah Consultative Council February 2 2016: Sharjah created history today (Sunday) with the people of the Emirate for the first time directly choosing their representatives for the Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC) the highest advisory body in the Emirate in what has been described as a turning point and milestone in the nation’s history recording an impressive 67% voter turnout.

After a breathless wait and elaborate counting of votes at Al Qasimia University late into night results were announced by the Supreme Committee of SCC Elections amid loud cheers and celebrations by the winning candidates and heavy presence of national and regional media.

Following are the names of the winners who have been declared elected to the Sharjah Council:

The first SCC polls recorded an impressive 67% voter turnout. The total number of votes polled stood at 16696. The number of male voters stood at 9694 (58%) while the female voter turnout was recorded at 7002 (42%).

While Sharjah City polled 5742 votes (57%) it was followed by Khorfakkan with 3488 votes (70%).

HE Mansour bin Nassar Chairman of the Supreme Committee for the SCC Elections congratulated His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qasimi Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah on the spectacular success of the first SCC polls realizing his vision of encouraging greater public participation in the decision-making process and development of the Emirate he added.

He also congratulated the winners on their historic win and wished them all success in their responsibility of representing the aspirations and concerns of the people of Sharjah in the highest advisory body hoping they would do their utmost to justify the trust of the people in them. All members of the Supreme Committee of SCC Elections besides senior Sharjah officials members of media and candidates were present during the counting of votes at Al Qasimia University.

Earlier the curtain finally came down on the 4-day long marathon of an election that saw the Emiratis turn out in huge numbers with immense enthusiasm with family and friends to exercise their vote at polling centres in nine electoral zones across Sharjah. The Emiratis flocked to the polling stations across Sharjah to exercise their vote in the last lap of the election before polling closes on Sunday.

Under the supervision of the Supreme Election Committee three polling committees were constituted to oversee the counting of votes.

The SCC elections were held under the slogan of ‘Take Part in Decision Making’ in accordance with the directives of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah. A total of 195 candidates including 43 women competed for 21 seats spread across the Emirate including Sharjah City Kalba Khorfakkan Dhaid Dibba Al Hisn Bataeh Maliha Hamriya and Madam. Up to 24952 people above the age of 21 including 13794 men and 11158 women from across the Emirate registered to vote.
