Gurgaon: A crew member of a chartered bus died after being attacked twice by a rival bus operator's men in full view of hundreds of motorists on the Gurgaon-Delhi expressway on Sunday evening.
No passerby came to the rescue of 28-year-old Amit Dabas when he was being battered with iron rods near the toll booths for commercial vehicles entering Delhi.
Minutes before that, the same men attacked Dabas and his crew near IFFCO Chowk, metres from a police post, but no cop had come to their aid either.
An FIR was filed more than 12 hours after Dabas died, on Monday morning, the delay apparently caused by the Udyog Vihar and Sector 18 police stations fighting over jurisdiction.
"Though it was rush hour, nobody intervened," said Amarjeet, operator of the bus on which Dabas worked. "The accused managed to flee. We rushed Dabas to Artemis hospital in Dwarka. But he died before we reached. Doctors declared him brought dead," Amarjeet added.
The attack stemmed from a quarrel on routes and soliciting passengers by the two bus operators, who happen to be relatives of Dabas. A resident of Rani Khera village in Delhi, Dabas worked as a conductor on Amarjeet's bus that runs on the Delhi-Dabri route. Amarjeet is Dabas' cousin, as are Pravesh and Vinit, the men who attacked him, police said. Pravesh and Vinit's bus operates on the same route.
The simmering tension flared up on Sunday evening over an argument, police said. Pravesh and Vinit allegedly stopped Amarjeet's bus at IFFCO Chowk and smashed its panes. A police booth was just metres away but it remained inert. Amarjeet said he then called the police and asked for help. But help never came.

Amarjeet, Dabas and an aide Lalit drove away with the bus. They had just crossed the Gurgaon-Delhi border at Sirhaul when a Chevrolet Beat overtook them and screeched to a halt in front. "Pravesh, Vinit and two more people were in the car. They pulled Dabas down and started thrashing him. Pravesh landed a blow on his head on his head with an iron rod and he fainted," as Amarjeet said in his police complaint.
After a long delay, an FIR was eventually filed at Udyog Vihar police station against Pravesh, Vinit, Ravinder alias Modha and another person under sections 302 (murder), 34 (common intention) and 340 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC.
"Several teams have been formed. They are conducting raids to nab the suspects," said Hawa Singh, ACP (crime). Dabas' family claimed an attempt to shoot him had been made in Delhi's Palam Gaon earlier too.
