February 03, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 02:05 am IST

Starting today, The Hindu In School will run this column every Wednesday through the month of February and in the first week of March. Students can mail us questions which will be answered by the CBSE

1 Now, there are two semesters in a year as per the CBSE pattern. It would be better if we had three semesters. S. Vaishnavi, Class 9, Chelammal Vidhyaashram (CBSE), Musiri.

Each academic session is split into two terms. The academic assessment for scholastic areas depends on the student’s performance in an academic session as per the following weightage -

Term I: FA1 (10%) + FA2(10%) + SA1 (30%) = 50%

Term II: FA3 (10%) + FA4(10%) + SA2 (30%) = 50%

As is evident from the above, each assessment has got a specified weightage. For the evaluation to be carried out in a comprehensive manner as per the guidelines of Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation and its proper implementation, the system of two semesters a year is followed.

2 Why is there a need for Open Text Based Assessment in Summative Assessment-2? Prashant Singh, Class 9, Samsara The World Academy, Greater Noida.

The Board recommends multiple modes of assessment to cater to varied abilities and individual strengths of learners. In order to enhance analytical and theoretical skills, the Open Text Based Assessment was introduced.

3 Why can’t the third language be taught in classes 9 and 10? Khushi Bhati, Class 9, Samsara The World Academy,Greater Noida.

In the sub-heads 2.1 and 2.2 quoted under ‘Scheme of Studies’ on page no. 31 as in Secondary Curriculum 2015-16 main subjects/ volume – 1, uploaded on the CBSE academic website, the learning areas will include two languages out of the mentioned languages as (1) and (2). In addition to the above two languages (compulsory), another language may be opted as an Additional Subject. It is also mentioned here that out of the two compulsory languages one must be either Hindi or English.
