CHENNAI/TRICHY: Parliamentarians got an additional bonus this year with the Kendriya Vidyalayas Sangathan Board of Governors increasing from six to 10 the number of children (of their choice) that they could admit to KV schools across the country. With the increased quota, nearly 7,900 KV seats would be based on recommendations of Members of Parliament.
The Union government runs about 1,000 KVs in the country.
“Consequent to the approval of the Board of Governors of KV's during the mee ing held on the October 30, 2015, the existing quota of six children for admission in Kendriya Vidayalas on the recommendation of Members of Parliament during each academic session under the special dispensation scheme is enhanced from six to ten.
This would be with effect from the next academic session, that is 2016-17," said the notification released from the KV Sangathan and signed by commissioner Santhosh Kumar Mall.
The move comes in the wake of demands by MPs who pointed to the large number of requests they get from their constituencies. HRD minister Smriti Irani is the chairperson of the KVS.
Despite complaints of some MPs exploiting the quota and demanding money for recommendations, several deserving students would benefit from the move. The order was issued a week ago.The previous increase was made in 2012 when the quota was increased from two to six.
There are a total of 45 Kendriya Vidyalayas in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Of this, there are 37KVs in the Chennai region. The 39 MPs in Tamil Nadu can fill 390 seats in the KVs across the state while the 18 Rajya Sabha members can add another 180 seats.

As per the notification, each Lok Sabha MP can refer 10 cases for admission under the scheme in an academic year but such recommendations shall be confined to children whose parents belong to their constituency. For RS members, the state from which the member has been elected would be deemed to be his constituency for this purpose. The admissions shall be over and above the class strength.
A total of 570 seats can be filled this year through the revised MP quota in the Chennai region.
