Pulkit-Yami to Varun-Alia: Love in the time of film promotions

Well, we know love can happen anywhere, anytime. And it can stand the test of time' and movie promotions. In showbiz, romance can happen just for promotions, too. Get it? It's known that often sparks fly between actors while making a film, and in a few cases it culminates into a genuine love story. But mostly, their hearts beat for each other during their movie promotions, and the pulse quickly drops post release.Affairs are planted and planned to give movie promotions a 'kick' and make it garam gossip in the rumour mills. Sometimes, it works, but often it's a wasted effort. A few days ago, Pulkit Samrat made a statement that rumours of his link-up with co-star Yami Gautam 'was started to promote the film'. In an industry that makes its living by telling stories, who knows where the truth lies. Let's take a look at some recent examples:
Pulkit and Yami

The lead pair of 'Sanam Re,' Yami Gautam and Pulkit Samrat, is talk-of-the-town for their alleged affair. The media has bombarded them with questions and needless to say, the denials have come in dozens. Recently at an event, Pulkit said, 'The rumours were started only to promote the film. And we are very happy because it is helping the movie.' Interestingly, sometime ago, in an interview Pulkit's estranged wife, Shweta Rohira had said, 'Yami had her eyes on Pulkit.' Confusing, huh?

When we quizzed Pulkit about his statement, he explained, 'I've been at the receiving end of these rumours. I am actually too new to figure if they help a film or not in terms of box office numbers. But the audience is smart now and no matter what is said, content is a film's biggest appeal.'
Director of 'Sanam Re,' Divya Khosla Kumar reacted to this saying, 'I wouldn't want to comment on someone else's personal life. But we don't need to rely on such publicity gimmicks. My debut film 'Yaariyan' had five newcomers and it did pretty well without any such news around it. I am confident about my film and I know it doesn't need such gossip to do well. Beyond that, it is not my place to comment on the personal lives of my actors.'
Arjun and Sonakshi

Last year, Sonakshi Sinha and Arjun Kapoor were supposedly a couple all through the shooting of 'Tevar.' The film bombed at the box-office and this relationship went kaput. In 2013, before the release of 'R...Rajkumar,' Sonakshi was rumoured to be seeing co-star Shahid Kapoor. Once the film released, it quickly became a thing of the past, and neither of them acknowledge it.
Karan and Bipasha

The one time that rumours of a romance between co-stars outlived the promotions was in the case of Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover. Stories about their romance started during the promotions of 'Alone' (2015). Though they haven't admitted to their relationship, their social media posts are so lovey-dovey that we don't need to ask.
Alia and Arjun

She was linked with her co-star Arjun Kapoor during their film '2 States.' She laughed off the rumours saying, 'I was in the news for dating Arjun. Interestingly, now the latest update I heard is that I have broken up with him. News like this will come and go, it doesn't bother me. He's a good friend and fun to hang out with.'
Alia and Varun

She was posed with umpteen questions about her relationship with Varun Dhawan during the promotions of 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania' (2014). Alia said she was 'possessive' about her co-star, and he spoke about their 'love-hate relationship', and we all thought it was heading somewhere. Clearly not. Later, it was reported that the two even ignored each other at an award function. Her on-screen chemistry with Varun and Arjun was unquestionably amazing, and her films with both of them were successful at the box office too.

Sooraj and Athiya

Newbies Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty were constantly quizzed on whether they were seeing each other during their launch film 'Hero.' In one interview Sooraj had opened up and said, 'I love her and she loves me. But dating, no. She is the closest female friend I have, but she is not my girlfriend.' Athiya, too, had clarified, 'I am not dating Sooraj. And I will not ever date him as he is so close to me and I don't want anything to come in between and ruin that.' The film failed to impress, and while they were individually liked by the audience, as a romantic screen pair they didn't quite make the mark.
Hrithik and Katrina

Hrithik Roshan's first film after his separation from Sussanne Khan was 'Bang Bang.' Hrithik was emotionally vulnerable and Katrina Kaif was a friend to him. And of course, in the film they sizzled and shared a kiss too. This sparked rumours of their closeness. The gossip continued for months and died down after the film completed its run at the box office.
