College Roundup: UCI’s William-Mensah breaks own school record

SEATTLE — UC Irvine sophomore Persis William-Mensah, an Estancia High product, broke her own school record in the 60-meter dash to pace Anteaters competitors.

William-Mensah’s time of 7.49 seconds in qualifying was one-tenth faster than the previous standard, set last year. She ran 7.55 in the prelims, but did not advance to the final.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 58, Vanguard 55

Melissa Norman had 12 points and 15 rebounds for the host, No. 8-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

The No. 12-ranked Mustangs improved to 19-2, 9-0 in conference, while Vanguard fell to 14-4, 6-2.

Samantha Doucette had 17 points for Vanguard.

Hawaii 59, UC Irvine 35

HONOLULU – Mokun Fajemisin had 11 points to lead the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

UCI (4-18, 1-7 in conference) shot 28.3% from the field and had 25 turnovers.

Hawaii is 12-9, 5-3..

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 82, The Master’s 57

Senior Jaamon Echols had 22 points and teammate Malachi Hoosein added 20 to lead the hosts Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Zach Allmon had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the winners (14-6, 3-5 in conference).

TMC fell to 4-13, 1-8.

SOFTBALL

Orange Coast 19, El Camino-Compton 0

Two Pirates’ pitchers combined on a five-inning no-hitter in the nonconference season opener on Saturday.

Freshman Montana Roelvink struck out four in four innings and freshman Cayla Ezelle fanned two in one inning as the game ended due to the mercy rule.

Eight OCC players had multiple hits and all nine hitters drove in runs for the winners.

Anna Martin had three hits and three runs batted in to pace the 20-hit attack.

Linnea Donahugh and Taylor Gallo (two doubles) also had three hits apiece, while Ezelle was two for four with three RBIs.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept Marymount California, claiming the opening game, 10-6, then posting a 9-1 win on Saturday in nonconference action.

The No. 22-ranked Lions (4-0) were led by senior shortstop Jose Rojas, who was five for seven with three runs batted in and three runs in the two games.

Kody Wright went two for three with three RBIs in the first game, in which Brock Eissman drove in three runs.

Vanguard trailed, 4-3, before it scored seven in the sixth inning.

Ryan Heinle allowed no earned runs in six innings to record the win, as Vanguard committed six errors.

In Game 2, Matt Harris was two for two with two RBIs, while Paul Keating also drove in two.

Tyler Steele allowed five hits and no earned runs in five innings to earn the win in Game 2.

Marymount California is 2-4.

Vanguard plays host to Redlands on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Long Beach 5, Orange Coast 1

LONG BEACH — The visiting Pirates produced just four hits in the nonconference game on Saturday.

Sophomore Chris Prescott was two for four, while freshman Eric Wagaman was one for four with one run batted in for OCC (1-1).

Long Beach is 1-0.
