Mansa: Suspecting a Mofar village resident of bootlegging, some alleged henchmen of liquor contractors chased him on a jeep and rammed their vehicle into his motorcycle, leaving him injured. The man, Satnam Singh, suffered injuries on his leg and forehead.
Villagers accused the liquor contractors' men of indulging in high-handedness and pelted stones at them.
When a police team reached the spot, Jhunir SHO Jaskaran Singh was hurt in stone pelting. Tension mounted in Mofar after the incident. Police have registered a case against driver Aman Singh of causing injuries and another case under attempt to murder charges has been registered against villagers for injuring the SHO.
An injured Satnam said, "Associates of contractors tried to beat me and falsely accused me of smuggling liquor from Haryana though I have nothing to do with it." Another Mofar resident Mukhtiar Singh said men of liquor contractors had laid a checkpoint on Mofar-Pilchian road on Friday night and stopped Satnam who was coming from Haryana side on his motorcycle.
Mansa senior superintendent of police Raghbir Singh said, "The driver of contractors caused an accident wherein Santam suffered injury. A case has been registered against driver and attempt to murder case has been registered against Mofar residents Kulwinder Singh, Amritpal, Monu, Bali and 50 unidentified persons for attacking the police team. No complaint has been filed about men of contractors trying to beat Satnam over allegations of liquor smuggling. If the fact comes to light, it will be investigated and appropriate action will be taken."
