Lahiri shoots 70 but misses cut

SAN DIEGO: Anirban Lahiri salvaged some confidence and pride with a two-under 70 in the second round but missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open here.

San Diego, January 30

Anirban Lahiri salvaged some confidence and pride with a two-under 70 in the second round but missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open here. Coming after the first round 80, it was a relief of sorts for the 28-year-old, playing his rookie season on the PGA Tour.

Lahiri started on the 10th and had just one birdie and one bogey on the back nine of the Torrey Pines (North) and then added two birdies on the second nine. That gave him a 70, but he still missed the cut by ample distance.

It was Lahiri’s debut at the Torrey Pines. Also missing out on the cut this week were defending champion and world No. 2 Jason Day (72-76), Rickie Fowler (73-71), Justin Rose (71-73) and Phil Mickelson (69-76). KJ Choi shares the lead with Gary Woodland as both players shot 68-67 in the two rounds. Trailing them by one is Dustin Johnson.

Rai best Indian at tied-29

Singapore: Himmat Rai carded a two-over 73 in the third round to slip to tied-29th, the highest among the four Indians in the field, in the SMBC Singapore Open here today.

Himmat was tied-15th after the second round. Rahil Gangjee, who was in the top-10 after the first round, is now tied-51st with rounds of 68-72-75.

SSP Chawrasia (71-71-76) was undone by a poor second nine, which was the front half of the course. He is tied-62nd. Shiv Kapur is tied-68th.

World No. 1 Jordan Spieth struggled again with his putting as he ended a long 28-hole Saturday three shots off the pace. The American was on the course at 7:30am to finish 12 holes of his weather-delayed second round, signing for a one-under 71 before returning in the afternoon to shoot one-under for 16 holes of his third round before dusk fell. — PTI, Reuters
