MUMBAI: The bodyguard of former city Congress chief Kripashankar Singh is on the run after stealing cash and a diamond ring collectively worth Rs 26 lakh.
The accused, identified as Lolak Ram Pandey, has been working with Singh since three years and hails from the same town as the politician.
According to the police, Singh’s son, on Thursday evening, asked Pandey to deliver the ring and cash to his sister who resides at Opera House in south Mumbai.
Pandey never reached her residence.
“Singh’s son tried to contact Pandey on his cellphone but it was switched off,” said an official from the Vakola police station. On Friday, Singh’s son approached the cops and lodged a complaint. A police team has launched a manhunt for Pandey.
“During the probe, the car that Pandey had used was found abandoned at Bandra-Kurla Complex near a cafe on Saturday. We searched the vehicle and found the diamond ring but Pandey has been missing with Rs 1 lakh cash,” said the official. A case under Section 408 (breach of trust by a servant) has been registered.
On Thursday, Singh’s son asked Pandey to deliver a ring and cash to his sister’s place, said the police. But Pandey never reached her house. The car he used was found abandoned on Saturday. The ring was found in the car.
