New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru
University on Friday released the
fellowship amount due to Madan Meher, a PhD scholar at the school of international studies (SIS), after adjusting the amount he had taken as advance for a field trip to Brussels but spent on his grandmother's medical treatment. Meher had threatened to commit
suicide in a letter to former vice-chancellor S K Sopory, alleging discrimination and demanding extension of his fellowship.
Taking a sympathetic view, the
JNU administration said, "The issue was resolved in view of the financial difficulties faced by the student and the unfortunate deaths in his family." The university has also assured that Meher will not face any difficulty in the submission of his PhD thesis.
Meher wrote to the dean of SIS expressing his gratitude for addressing his "financial distress and personal anxiety." He thanked the JNU administration, including VC M Jagadesh Kumar.
