Khan Market store robbed, no clues

New Delhi: Lutyens' Delhi may be under a multi-layered security cover, but that did not deter burglars from breaking into a store selling sports goods in Khan Market. Though the extent of loss is yet to be ascertained, shop owners said that the incident has shaken them as none of the CCTV cameras installed in the area recorded the crime.
The incident was reported around 10am when employees found the shutter broken and the store vandalised.
An inquiry was conducted by the store owners and it was found that the miscreants had arrived around 5am posing as employees and broken the locks to enter the store. Security personnel posted at a kiosk opposite the store said that the men claimed to be from a movers and packers company and were there to shift the goods elsewhere.
Around 20 CCTV cameras were installed in the market in 2008 by both the shop owners and Delhi Police after a theft in 10 shops. The market also has three police observation posts at the entry gates and regular patrols are conducted at night. Though live recordings could be seen, previous footages were missing from some cameras.
Sanjeev Mehra from Khan Market Traders' Association said that the issue of the missing footage has been taken up with the authorities. "There were issues with the wires of the cameras getting cut due to construction activities. We have pointed this out to the operators and Delhi Police. We are yet to be given a status report about it," he said. Shopkeepers claim that they depend on cameras installed outside their shops for security.
Preliminary investigations suggest the role of an insider since the glass door at the entry of the shop was not damaged. The burglars also damaged only a few mannequins. A case of theft has been registered and probe initiated, said New Delhi DCP, Jatin Narhwal.
