The BJP government in Maharashtra has decided to appeal against the Bombay High Court’s refusal to permit it to host a mega cultural event at Girgaum Chowpatty as part of the ‘Make in India Week’ next month.

A day after the High Court turned down the state government’s proposal to hold the event at the venue, the Maharashtra government on Friday said that it will now file an appeal against this order in the Supreme Court.

While the main events that will feature business seminars and a pitch from various states to attract investment in the manufacturing sector are scheduled to be held at the Bandra Kurla Complex and Worli’s National Sports Club of India (NSCI), the government has planned a cultural show at the Girgaum Chowpatty as part of a series of event to project Mumbai as a “vibrant city.”

The Maharashtra government has sought permission to provide 2 lakh square feet space at Girgaum Chowpatty for the cultural show, which is being labelled at Maharashtra night, for four hours on February 14.

Festive offer

A High Court-appointed committee meant to monitor activities on the popular beach had asked the government to seek the HC’s permission for the show. A HC division bench comprising Justice A S Oka and Justice CV Bhadang had on Thursday denied permission to hold the show at the beach where political meeting and cultural gatherings are prohibited.

Bhushan Gagrani, Chief Executive Officer, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), confirmed that the government has decided to approach the Supreme Court against the order. “The Make In India Week is an iconic event. We chose Girgaum Chowpatty for the cultural event since it is a venue of importance. We also want to throw open this show to the general public to involve them in the event too. We feel Chowpatty is best suited for an event of this scale and importance,” Gagrani said.

While the government is expected to push for a hearing in the SC this Monday, it has also begun scouting for alternative venues in case the SC too refuses permission. “We have zeroed in on the Mahalaxmi Turf Club and the University Grounds at Kalina,” Gagrani added.

With the Make In India Week being touted as the Fadnavis government’s biggest opportunity yet to showcase Maharashtra as country’s favourite investment destination, sources said that the government is leaving no stones unturned. Back channel talks are on with several national and global business houses to negotiate fresh investment deals in the run-up to the mega event.
