MUMBAI: A 20-year-old biker and pillion died of severe head injuries after the bike (Pulsar) they rode crashed into the divider few distance before the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) on Thursday night. The deceased—biker Mohammed Shaikh (20) and pillion Shakeel Shaikh (21)—were riding without helmet when the incident occurred at around 9.30pm. Their bodies was identified minutes after their friends who followed them from behind on the same route.
The Bandra police said the two deceased are hailed from Kurla and was declared dead before admission at Bhabha Hospital.
Police reached the spot after they received calls from one of the deceased friend Amar Khan. Mohammed, a second year mechanical engineering student, along with his friends planned to go to Carter Road after dinner. “They took the western express highway (WEH) after crossing Kalanagar signal and entered the route leading to the BWSL (south bound. The deceased friends claimed that they were heading towards Carter Road. But the deceased and their bike were found on the extreme right,” said a police officer.
A businessman passing from the route in his car stopped at the spot on seeing the biker hit the divider and lying on the road. “I stopped my car and put on the emergency lights so that speeding motorists should not run over the two youths. They were found lying on the road with severe head injuries. Some youths reached the spot and were trying to take the bodies to the other side but I asked them to call the police. They does not seem to go towards Carter Road because they should have kept their vehicle on the left but here they were on extreme right which seems they planned to enter the BWSL,” Rajeen Jain told TOI.
In the statement, Mohammed’s friend Khan said, “We left our Kurla residence after dinner. Mohammed sped away as soon as the signal went green at Kala Nagar junction but we got stuck after it turned red. When reached the spot found crowd. A close look at the spot found both Mohammed and Shakeel lying on the road with head injuries. We planned to go to Carter Road to spend the night.”
Bandra police senior inspector R Dhavle confirmed the incident. A case of accident has been registered.
