In a surprise raid conducted at three locations in the city on Thursday, Corporation Deputy Commissioner S. Shanthi detected collection of excess fee by contractors of parking lots for parking two-wheelers.

The Corporation runs two-wheeler parking lots at Arapalayam bus stand, near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, near eastern entry of railway junction along West Veli Street, opposite Vishaal de Mall, near Tamukkum Grounds, at Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand, at Eco Park and other places.

While a few contractors collected the prescribed fee, a majority collected excess fee. An official said that tokens which were to be issued for Rs. 3 were given for Rs 5. The contractors also charged for overnight parking without issuing any tokens.

Following specific complaints, the team led by Ms. Shanti and Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) P.S. Mani inspected the parking lots in West Veli Street, Gokhale Road and Eco Park and decided to impose a fine of Rs. 25,000 each on the three contractors for excess fee collection.

In a press release, Ms. Shanti said that if the contractors continued to collect excess fee, the agreement with them would be terminated and legal action initiated.

She appealed to the public to lodge a complaint if there was excess fee collection. She also directed the contractors to display the rates prominently.
