Palkhiwala award for Bang, Anandwan

Dr Abhay Bang of SEARCH, Gadchiroli, will be presented the 10th Nani A Palkhivala Award for Civil Liberties by the Palkhivala Memorial Trust in Mumbai on February 4.

Nagpur: Dr Abhay Bang of SEARCH, Gadchiroli, will be presented the 10thNani A Palkhivala Award for Civil Liberties by the Palkhivala Memorial Trust in Mumbai on February 4.
On the occasion, a lecture will be delivered by Reserve Bank of India governor Dr Raghuram G Rajan.
The panel of judges involved in the award selection comprised Justice (retd) Sujata Manohar, Justice (retd) SN Variava and Sudha N Murthy, chairperson, Infosys Foundation, Bengaluru.

The award honours individuals and organizations who have displayed extraordinary initiative in the preservation and defence of civil liberties in India. It carries cash award of Rs 2,50,000 and a citation. The organizational award will be given to Anandwan, founded by late Baba Amte at Warora.
Dr Abhay Bang is an eminent public health expert, social activist and also the founder of Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health (SEARCH), Gadchiroli. Along with his wife Dr Rani Bang, he has worked on various health issues of the tribal and non-tribal villages of the district, on reducing neonatal mortality rate to playing a substantial role in introduction of prohibition.
Presently, he is the adviser of the state-level task force to effectively implement the ban on alcohol and tobacco and chairman of an Union government’s expert committee on tribal health constituted by ministry of health and family welfare.
