The RSP’s Kovoor Kunjumon Thursday resigned as an MLA, stating that no “self-respecting person” can continue with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
The Kunnathur MLA’s resignation is likely to pave the way for a split in RSP.
The RSP, which is part of the CPM-led Left Front elsewhere in the country, had joined the UDF on the eve of 2014 Lok Sabha elections after the Marxist party denied ticket to the RSP’s candidate from its stronghold Kollam, putting up its own candidate.

With Kunjumon’s exit, the strength of the UDF will be reduced to 72 in the 140-strong Assembly. In recent past, Kerala Congress(B) legislator K B Ganesh Kumar and Kerala Congress(M)’s P C George had left the ruling coalition. The UDF is faced with multiple corruption cases at present, with the Opposition demanding resignation of CM Oommen Chandy, who is facing inquiry in the solar scam.
After resigning, Kunjumon claimed that several other RSP leaders and workers will quit UDF to work with the LDF. RSP state secretary A A Azeez said Kunjumon had betrayed the party and his exit will have no effect on the party’s Kerala unit.
