Poll: What's the ideal temperature for outdoor activities in Phoenix?

I was with friends at an outdoor gathering last weekend when the conversation turned to the weather.

Specifically, we talked about what a beautiful day it was. It was about 65 degrees and sunny, not too hot, not too cold. The consensus was it was a great day to do just about anything outdoors except swim.

But was it a perfect day? Is there such a thing?

There were days when I lived in Michigan when I found myself hitting balls on tennis courts where the parks department hadn’t bothered to put the nets up yet. They probably didn’t think anybody would be stupid enough to be out there in 40- or 50-degree weather, but when your season is limited, you get out when you can.

What's your idea of perfect weather? Let us know!

I know runners back east who will brave freezing winter winds to hit the road as long as snow or ice isn’t an issue. I know folks out here who think nothing of jogging when it’s over 110 degrees outside, even when you try to tell them it’s dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service’s heat index chart, when the apparent temperature (based on a combination of heat and humidity) passes 90 degrees people should use extreme caution when exerting themselves outdoors.

And then there are golfers.

Those poor souls will brave anything short of blizzards or a haboob to get a few holes in.

City-Data.com polled users of that website to determine the best temperature for getting outside. The top answer was 75 degrees, with 23.8 percent of the vote. People who responded to that poll went for 70 degrees next (20 percent) followed by 65 degrees (16 percent), 85 degrees (11.9 percent) and 80 degrees (11.4 percent).

So, what’s your idea of perfect weather to get outside?

Is it 80 degrees for a walk or a leisurely bike ride? A little cooler for a more strenuous ride, run or a game of soccer?

What’s a good range for taking one of the outdoor tables at your favorite pub or restaurant? Or is your favorite outdoor activity to get cozy in front of a firepit or chiminea (air quality permitting, of course).

When is it warm enough for you to take a dip in a backyard pool?

Let us know what’s your idea of perfect weather for outdoor activities. We’ll share some of the responses in this space in the coming weeks.
