CBO expects 40% decrease in ACA enrollment — 5 points

Practice Management

The Congressional Budget Office lowered its estimate from 21 million to 13 million for how many Americans will enroll in a healthcare plan purchased through the ACA marketplace, according to News Max Health.

Here are five points:

1. The CBO's adjusted estimation reiterates the Obama administration's previous assessment that less Americans are signing up for coverage in the third enrollment period.

2. Experts, in part, blame escalating premiums and out-of-pocket costs for this drop.

3. The CBO said many uninsured people who do not purchase coverage on the exchanged will be expected to buy coverage directly from a payer.

4. Budget projections indicate more people will receive subsides this year (11 million) than in 2015 (8 million).

5. Healthcare spending is expected to increase to $56 billion in 2017, up from $38 billion this year.
