SINGAPORE, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Governments and telecommunication operators in Southeast Asia are actively exploring opportunities offered by the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine to Machine (M2M) technologies.
Recently, the Philippines announced a GDP growth of 6.3% and IT spending growth of 10.1%. Gil Genio, COO of Globe Telecom shared that IoT’s potential is largely driven by the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications sectors and Mobile Network Operators with their existing network customer base, sales channels, billing and support systems.
Sigvart Eriksen, CMO of DTAC is confident that the current figure of 1 million will reach over 400 million connected devices in Thailand by 2020. “Thailand’s IoT market will explode, seeing large involvement from the government.”
Telkomsel’s T-drive, developed to monitor driving patterns, was a breakthrough for Indonesian’s automotive sector. "IoT in Indonesia is a limitless opportunity - we are committed to building this ecosystem,” said President Director of Telkomsel, Ririek Andriansyah.
The Malaysian government has huge plans for IoT. Dato Ng Wan Peng, COO of MDeC said, "Not only addressing the supply of IoT, we want to raise awareness among end users and create demand to drive digital adoption and economy growth. We aim to turn Malaysia into a matured digital economy by 2020 - to connect and empower government, business and people."
To leverage on the interest from governments and telcos, the Asia IoT Business Platform (AIBP) 2016 series will bring together end-users, platform providers, policy makers and solution providers to forge mutually-beneficial partnerships.
The series will showcase the value and economic impact of IoT/M2M solutions, including improving enterprise productivity, harnessing ICT and networks to alleviate problems in dense capital cities;
The city of Yokohama will present on smart city projects, while DHL will be sharing on how to leverage Big Data in the logistics sector. The Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology will discuss advanced manufacturing and smart factory applications - a main focus in Southeast Asian cities.
Zaf Coelho, Project Director of AIBP said, "Southeast Asia offers tremendous opportunities in terms of the scale and usage of IoT/M2M solutions, leveraging technology through key enterprise and policy decision making, leading the entire ASEAN region's transformation."
Ultimately, AIBP works towards catalysing the realization of smart cities for Southeast Asian nations.
