A FIFO worker's warning to Perth Airport long-term parkers

A Perth fly-in, fly-out worker says she will no longer park her car at Perth Airport's long-term car-park after thieves stole more than $3000 worth of spotlights from her Nissan Navara in January.

The woman claims her vehicle wasn't the only car targeted by thieves in the secure parking area, with spot lights and aerials missing from six other cars she noticed in D Block near her vehicle.

Local police also confirmed motorcycles had been reported stolen from the long-term car-park in recent months, but denied there was a spike in crime around the airport.

The FIFO worker questioned how items could be stolen from a car-park that is monitored by airport security and urged others to report theft incidents in the area.

"I would like to get the word out to warn people that this is happening at our airport and to put a stop to this behaviour," she said.

"The more people that report [thefts], the easier it is going to be for the police to track down who is actually doing it.

"Perth Airport can only do so much but they should be monitoring the cameras a little bit better, there are cameras there for a reason."

Belmont police Senior Sergeant Peter Woollons said police were yet to catch up with the culprits but were investigating the thefts.

"I think we've had about two [motorcycles] go in three months - I think one of them had a lock cut off and was driven out," she said.

"They're parked up there for a couple of weeks and somebody comes in there at some stage. We try and go through CCTV and see if we can come across anything.

"Most of [the thefts] are at the long-term car park, so they're patrolled by Federal police, they've got their own security, some of the [parking lots] are behind barriers.

"[The thefts are] not continuous; they just occur every now and then."

Perth Airport did not respond to questions about the thefts or security of the car park other than to say it had a "multi-layered approach" to security.

Long-term parkers pay $122 to leave their vehicle in the secure parking areas for eight days. Additional days cost $11 each thereafter.
