IAF Sukhoi shoots down suspicious object

New Delhi, Jan 26 (UNI) Amid a high security alert on the occasion of 67th Republic Day, the Indian Air Force today scrambled a frontline fighter Sukhoi aircraft to shoot down a suspicious object near Barmer in Rajasthan. After detecting suspicious movements of the balloon like object, the IAF scrambled its Su-30MKI, which shot it down swiftly. The aerial security threat was picked up at a time, when the Republic Day parade at Rajpath was in progress, with French President Francois Hollande present as the Chief Guest. "Between 1030 and 1100 hrs today, an unidentified balloon shaped object was spotted, " a spokesperson of the IAF told UNI. A fighter was launched from Jodhpur air base, which is designated base for scrambling operations in case of any aerial threat. "Further investigation is in progress," the spokesperson said. "Since it was a crucial time as the flypast over Rajapath was underway, we did not take any chance," a source in the IAF said. There were no reports of damage or casualties on the ground, the spokesperson added. UNI MK RJ RP1820
