A backcountry skier triggered an avalanche Monday just west of the Eisenhower Tunnel and was seriously injured after being partially buried.

The incident happened on Coon Hill, north of Interstate 70, according to a Summit County Rescue Group Facebook post.

The skier was buried up to his waist after triggering a large avalanche while skiing in steep chutes, the rescue group said.

The rescue group said the skier, who was skiing alone, was able to retrieve his cellphone and call 911. Rescuers stabilized the skier and brought him down the mountain in a toboggan to a waiting ambulance.

People using the Colorado backcountry should check conditions online, including at the Colorado Avalanche Information Center website, to minimize risk, the group said.
