CHENNAI: A 19-year-old nursing student hanged herself in her hostel room in Stanley Medical College and Hospital on Monday.
Police said Amudha had on Sunday returned to the hostel from her home in Villupuram after celebrating Pongal .
Amudha, from Kallakurichi in Villupuram district, was a second-year nursing student in Stanley Medical College and Hospital, an investigating officer said.

"She had taken leave for six days for Pongal but extended it by another week," the officer said. "Amudha's brother had accompanied her to the hostel from their hometown."
He said college officials told police Amudha failed to attend classes on Monday and told her hostel-mates that she would stay back in her room because she was ill. Later around 4 pm, her friends saw her hanging from the ceiling fan. She had used a dupatta to hang herself.
"She did not tell anyone that she was depressed and did not leave a suicide note," the officer said.
The Seven Wells police registered a case and sent the body for autopsy.
