The Film Society of Lincoln Center, the nonprofit that presents the New York Film Festival every year, and the Locarno International Film Festival will launch a U.S. edition of Locarno’s Industry Academy International in New York this spring.
The four-day program of training and networking — aimed at cultivating up-and-coming execs in distribution, sales, exhibition and programming — will be modeled on the Industry Academy program that Swiss festival Locarno has hosted at its own festival as well as in Mexico and in Brazil. The initiative in New York and its lineup of workshops, discussions and panels will focus specifically on raising diversity in the film industry, an issue that’s become a major topic of concern in Hollywood.
With six participants drawn from the fields of global sales, marketing, distribution, exhibition and programming, the New York version of the Industry Academy will run concurrently with New Directors/New Films, the annual festival (presented by FSLC and the Museum of Modern Art) showcasing first or second films from emerging filmmakers. The first eight titles of the 2016 ND/NF slate were recently announced, with international offerings such as Zhao Liang’s “Behemoth” and Raam Reddy’s “Thithi” on the roster.
With participants still to be selected, New York’s Industry Academy runs March 20-23 at the Film Society, located on the Lincoln Center campus on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
