Sangam (Allahabad): Prakash (23) of Rewa, Balak Ram (26) of Pratapgarh and Dharmendra (22) of Allahabad are performing kalpvas for the first time. The banks of Ganga have turned into meditation and spiritual centre for thousands of youngsters like them. They would remain here till Maghi Purmina (February 22).
Prakash says that he will undergo kalpwas vrata and get honoured with the title of kalpwasi.
"I have heard my elders talking about the tough time being spent on the banks of Ganga during kalpwas and thought to be a part of it this year."
Pursuing post-graduation, Prakash said that the tradition of observing kalpwas at Teerthraj Prayag is old and people of all age come here for self purification. Our religious scriptures elaborate about kalpwas."
Dharmendra says that chanting of slokas, bhajan and participating in religious and spiritual activities on the banks of Ganga would enlighten his life. "Everyone should perform kalpwas to rejuvenate himself or herself on the pious land of Prayag," he said. Priests claim with the Paush Purnima, the month-long kalpwas will be an austerity period during the pious month of Magh. It is believed that those who observe kalpwas with devotion, would seeing gods and goddesses on the earth.
