Nigeria defeated Gabon to win their first game at the on-going CAHB African Men’s Handball Championship in Egypt.

After losing their first two games at the on-going Men’s Handball African Cup of Nations, Nigeria in the early hours of yesterday defeated Gabon to rekindle hope of qualifying for the second round of the competition.

The match held inside the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex Hall 2, saw both teams going at each order until the last seconds with Nigeria managing a one-point victory.

The Nigerians had earlier lost 16-24 to Cameroun and 34 to 20 to hosts, Egypt.

Yesterday’s victory has given Nigeria their first two points and moved the team off the bottom of the log to the fifth position.

They will face Morocco today.

In Saturday’s defeat by Egypt, the hosts started the first interval brightly, with Ahmed El-Ahmar proving influential.

Nigerians countered with their close marking technique checking the Egyptians despite the clear difference between both sides.

A rocket shot by Egypt’s Ali Zain swung the momentum back to Egypt and after a late triple goal surge by Egyptian star, El-Ahmar, Egypt led at the break 16-9.

The second started exactly like the first ended with Egypt bursting into numerous goal scoring positions and pegging Nigeria back, at one point the Egyptians led 22-10 with the Nigerians struggling.

Egypt, who are top of Group A on six points, have advanced into the quarter-finals following their win against Cameroon which ended 30-20. In second place is Algeria, Morocco occupy third spot while Cameroun are fourth.
